The Humanities Council was founded in 1976 as part of the bicentennial celebrations of the city of Grand Rapids, MI. Since
then, we have presented hundreds of public humanities programs, including author visits, writing programs, and many more.
Our two book discussion series, Life Journey with Books and Biography, remain popular, and we continue to collaborate
with other area organizations on the One Book, One County county-wide book club, featuring A Free Life by Ha Jin in 2008.
In 2003 we published the book Heart and Soul: The Story of Grand Rapids Neighborhoods, and in 2007 we finished a documentary
film called Landmarks of Grand Rapids: A Look at Sacred Heart Church parish, Heritage Hill, and Eastown.
