All programs will be held in the Wisner Center at the Cascade Township branch of Kent District Library (2870 Jack Smith Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546), our co-sponsor for these events, from 9:30-11am.

September 18:  Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky, led by Dr. Kathleen Blumreich, Professor of English at Grand Valley State University. 

October 16:  The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls, led by Dr. Kathleen Blumreich, Professor of English at Grand Valley State University. 

November 20:  Digging to America by Ann Tyler, led by Dr. Wendy Wenner, Dean of the College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Grand Valley State University.  

Biography

September 11:  Miracle At Philadelphia: The Story of the Constitutional Convention May - September 1787 by Catherine Drinker Bowen.  Constitution Day is this month:  help us celebrate with this tale of how America’s most important historical document was constructed by some of our nation’s greatest minds.  Our leader, Paul Nelson, says this is one of his favorite biographies!  (You may also be interested to know that the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies at Grand Valley State University will be having a Constitution Day celebration called Democracy's Challenge and the 2008 Presidential Election on September 17-18.)

 

October 9:  We will be discussing two books, one by each of the two 2008 Presidential candidates: 

Faith of My Fathers: A Family Memoir by John McCain

AND

The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream by Barack Obama. 

 

November 13:  President Lincoln: The Duty of a Statesman by William Lee Miller.  Abraham Lincoln remains our most written about President and a beloved and influential international figure.   In honor of the 200th anniversary of his birth, join us for this discussion.
