Community Book Discussions are held from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. on the dates listed in the Wisner Center at the Cascade Township branch of Kent District Library, 2870 Jack Smith Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.                 

All book discussions are co-sponsored by Kent District Library. 

Life Journey With Books

March 4 The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by MaryAnne Shaffer and Annie Barrows, Boston Globe called it " a poignant, funny novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit.... This one is a treat.”  Kathleen Blumreich, Professor of English at GVSU will facilitate discussion.

 

April 8  The Book of Dead Birds, by Gayle Brandeis, winner of  Barbara Kingsolver’s Bellweather Award.  “The Book of Dead Birds has an edgy beauty that enhances the seriousness of its contents.” –Toni Morrison.  We are privileged to have the author read from her book and facilitate discussion at this event.

 

May 13  The Madonnas of Leningrad, by Debra Dean.  In this exciting morning, Sylvia Krissoff, local art history expert, will give a lecture on the art discussed in the book and Dr. Wendy Wenner, Dean of the College of Interdisciplinary Studies at GVSU, will facilitate discussion on the book.

April 1  The Road from Coorain, by Jill Ker Conway.   A memoir that “tells the story of her astonishing journey into adulthood -- a journey that would ultimately span immense distances and encompass worlds, ideas, and ways of life that seem a century apart.” - from the inside flap.  Dr. Paul Nelson, President Emeritus of Aquinas College, facilitates discussion.

 

May 6  Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, by Dee Brown.  A book The New York Times called "Original, remarkable, and finally heartbreaking . . . Impossible to put down."  Dr. Paul Nelson, President Emeritus of Aquinas College, facilitates discussion.
