Grand Rapids Area Council for the Humanities

Welcome to the Grand Rapids Area Council for the Humanities!
Thank you for browsing our current website as we develop a new online presence.
A new website is planned to launch in 2010.

Our 2009-2010 program year features the theme "Cultivating a Sense of Place."  Community book discussions, a documentary film, and author visits are part of this year's line-up of exciting events.

Author Visits Spring 2010

Thursday, March 11, 9:30 am - 11:00 am
Wisner Center
Cascade Branch of Kent District Library
2870 Jack Smith Avenue SE
Grand Rapids, MI  49546

Author and GVSU writing professor, Catherine Frerichs, will read from her newly published book, Desires of the Heart: A Daughter Remembers Her Missionary Parents.  Frerichs’s parents were missionaries in Papua New Guinea from 1937-1975.  She uses their letters and other research to understand why they followed a God of love even though that meant sacrificing their children’s wellbeing.  Questions and conversation will follow on gender roles, vocation, religion, and encountering the “other.”

Book Discussion Series
Spring 2010

Our two popular book discussion series, Biography and Life Journey with Books, continue this fall with titles that honor our history and diverse culture.

All book discussion programs will be held in the Wisner Center at the Cascade Township branch of Kent District Library (2870 Jack Smith Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546), our co-sponsor for these events, from 9:30-11am.
